Marketing Objectives

When creating any kind of product, marketing is an important factor. When marketing, it is also important to have marketing objectives as a lot of the time, these can help you stay on track in a project.

After doing some research about marketing objectives and having discussions about marketing objectives for a project such as a game, these are three marketing objectives that have stuck out to me when considering a project such as this one;

Communication, the coverage of the game and/or the developer and the number of plays/downloads/interactions with the project.

When learning about these objectives the idea of ‘SMART’ objectives was presented on our iLearn page by our lecturer. A ‘SMART’ objective is a framework that should help making goals easier and knowing when they are achieved. The ‘SMART’ framework guides objectives to be more Specific, more Measurable, make sure they are more Achievable and Relevant, and lastly having them be Time-bound. As an example, I will use the three marketing objectives listed above and use the ‘SMART’ framework to flesh them out;

1 – Communication. The aim of a communication objective will be to interact more with fans and users that have questions or inform them of updates and content for the game. This should be done through replies and comments on social media platforms at a 100% increase within a month of content release to keep consumers engaged and aware of the product and how it may change.

2 – Game Coverage. Growing presence of the game or developer is also very important. This could lead to more new players or have the player-base hop on to a new release from the developer if they enjoy the content being produced. A ‘SMART’ goal for this objective could be – Growing the number of Twitter followers of your business by a reasonable amount such as 10k within the year after a release.

3 – Number of Plays/Downloads. Upon a game being released this will likely be one of the main goals every time. The number of times someone has downloaded or played the game is an easy way to view the interaction people are having with it. Using the formula, a ‘SMART’ objective could look like – Double the number of plays/downloads of the game within the next month. This could tie in with the coverage of the game as if more people are seeing your game be talked about, they might check it out themselves and this would increase the interactions your game is getting.
