Email Marketing


Email marketing is exactly what it sounds like – Marketing through emails. For the majority of email marketing, you are marketing towards users that have already shown interest in your product or service. Previously, marketing techniques for new potential users was discussed, however email marketing techniques are very different as you are marketing to people that know about what you have to offer already.

Deciding to use email marketing is all well and good, but who would email? Building a mailing list is important firstly, because it allows you to create that group that are interested in what you have and secondly, because ‘cold mailing’ – sending to random users that haven’t shown interest in your product – is now illegal and therefore should not be done. This means that users should be signing up to the service, showing they opt-in to receiving the emails.

One of the techniques used in email marketing is to have newsletters for your business and/or product, as a newsletter will inform the recipient about the latest information or update of your product (New, 2019). In this case, when creating a game, having an email marketing newsletter can be used to inform players about content updates or upcoming events. These can also be used to give updates about development progress for unreleased titles or additional content.

Another technique that can be used when email marketing is using personalisation. This can cover multiple areas of personalising an email, not just specifically a person’s name and It is proven that personalised emails are more likely to be opened (The Ultimate Guide to Personalized Email for Every Marketer, 2020). As there is a higher chance of these emails being open it is clear that these can be useful when sending out emails to users as there is a higher chance they will actually read what you have sent them. This method is often used by online stores, personalising an email with the last item you have bought or similar items to that product.
